Compassionate help with a final return

When someone passes away, a final (terminal) tax return must be filed for the year of death, and there may be optional additional returns that may need to be filed. As executor, you also need to manage estate matters and clearance. We prepare these returns properly and explain each step.

Questions, answered

What is a final or terminal return?

It's the income tax return for the year a person died, covering income from January 1 to the date of death. It must be filed by the executor or legal representative.

Are there other returns besides the final one?

Sometimes. The Income Tax Act allows certain optional returns that can split income and reduce overall tax. We identify when these are worth filing.

What is a clearance certificate?

A clearance certificate confirms the CRA's taxes are paid, allowing the executor to distribute the estate without personal liability. We help obtain it.

What's the difference between the final return and an estate return?

The final return covers the deceased up to the date of death; income earned afterward by the estate is reported on a T3 estate return. We handle both.

How can you help as the executor?

We prepare the returns, coordinate with the estate, and guide you through deadlines and clearance — easing a heavy responsibility during a difficult time.
